The New Deal Era: Putting People to Work
Some initiatives in the New Deal Era designed to put people to work after the Great Depression included the Work Progress Administration (WPA). An illustrative book of the WPA is in this station. In 1943, African American photographer Gordon Parks, working for the Office of War Information, was assigned to photograph Mary McLeod Bethune in Daytona Beach, Florida. He stayed on for several weeks, documenting the activities on the campus and the street life of the surrounding neighborhood.
